Page 66. THE BATTLE OF ALAKA, 1637 AD, BETWEEN THE INHABITANTS OF HARUKU ISLAND AND THE PORTUGESE: (Probably from Abdul Wahaab Salampesi) Before there was any religion on Haruku, a Portugese vessel lay at anchor off Rohomoni. There was an old man fishing with his cast-net, and he saw that they were unloading rice. He asked if any were for sale, and they told him no, but that they would give him a gunny-sack if he needed it. He accepted it and carried it home to Alaka, not realizing until he was home that the sack had been leaking, and half his rice was gone. The leak was no accident, for the Portugese had bored it on purpose to show them the path, which they now followed. Their seige of Alaka lasted some days, and at that time a woman named MONIALATUARINAI was in command. She had bamboo canons loaded with rocks, and through her magic spoke and the rocks shot out and destroyed the ship below. There were evidently 3 in the fleet, for now the second ship brought reinforcements. Monialatuarinai commanded huge trees (Whereabouts of next page unknown).
